August 20th was a benchmark for Greece and the Greek people, since our country officially exited the enhanced surveillance framework, thus achieving one more major national objective.

This was made possible thanks to the fact that Greece “delivered on the bulk of its policy commitments made to the Eurogroup and achieved effective reform implementation, even under the challenging circumstances created by the Covid-19 pandemic and, more recently, by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine”, as noted by Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis and Commissioner for Economy Mr. Paolo Gentiloni.

The end of the enhanced surveillance framework, following the early repayment to the International Monetary Fund and the abolition of capital controls, closes – after 12 years – a difficult chapter for Greece.

The country returns to European normality and ceases to be an exception in the Eurozone.

This important achievement is a fruit and recognition of Greek citizens’ great efforts and enormous sacrifices, as well as the Government’s economic policy.

It has multiple benefits, since:

  • It strengthens the country’s position in international markets.
  • It provides an additional boost to growth dynamics of our country and the attraction of investments.
  • It grants degrees of freedom in economic policy, of course within the framework of the rules that apply to all European member-states.
  • It brings us closer to the achievement of the last major goal that we have set, which is regaining investment grade status.

During the last three years, we have proven that, despite unprecedented multi-level crises and new pan-European and international challenges, the Greek economy has become more dynamic and resilient and our country has become stronger in all aspects.

We continue to work hard in order to make it even more productive, outward-looking, modern and inclusive.
